The Biblical Art of Breastfeeding

Sorry about the Bible version, it is a bit hard to read, but was the only one I have on e-sword. Enjoy God's amazing word on nursing. It amazes me that much of the scriptures speak of God nursing us His child!!! How cool is that!

Exo 2:7 and 9 Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?
And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it.

Rth 4:16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.

1Th 2:7 But we were gentle in the midst of you, as when a nurse cherisheth her own children:

Num 11:12 Have I conceived all this people? have I brought them forth, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing-father carrieth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?

Gen 21:8 And the child grew, and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

1Sa 1:22-24 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned; and then I will bring him, that he may appear before Jehovah, and there abide for ever. And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only Jehovah establish his word. So the woman tarried and gave her son suck, until she weaned him. And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of meal, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of Jehovah in Shiloh: and the child was young.

Psa 131:2 Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child with his mother, Like a weaned child is my soul within me. (One of my favorites!!!)

Isa 11:8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.

Job 3:12 Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breast, that I should suck?

Isa 60:16 Thou shalt also suck the milk of the nations, and shalt suck the breast of kings; and thou shalt know that I, Jehovah, am thy Saviour, and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

Isa 66:11 that ye may suck and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

1Co 3:2 I fed you with milk, not with meat; for ye were not yet able to bear it: nay, not even now are ye able;

Heb 5:13 For every one that partaketh of milk is without experience of the word of righteousness; for he is a babe.

1Pe 2:1-3 Putting away therefore all wickedness, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes, long for the spiritual milk which is without guile, that ye may grow thereby unto salvation; if ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious:

To Wyoming and Back

On Father's Day my grandpa killed himself. His name was Glenn Arthur Watters, he was 83. He had cancer and was having trouble with age induced dementia. My parents called him to wish him happy father's day and he told them he was feeling ok, but just didn't want to live any more. He was found the next day by his cleaning lady, he had shot himself.

Last Monday we had his funeral. It was in Powell, WY. (just outside Cody) where he lived most of his life. My dad officiated the service. My grandpa was a very stubborn, arrogant and prideful man. He found it hard to love and be loved. Perhaps that is why he refused to accept the gift of salvation or to acknowledge the existence of God. That is the hardest part I suppose, because I don't have hope that he changed his mind in the end. I am left wondering if I did enough... But, I find peace in that I know my grandpa was given more opportunities than most people to experience Jesus, Christianity and the word of God. However, it is still hard to think that it just wasn't enough, could more have been done to change his mind???

I remember as a very little child (4 perhaps) knowing that my grandpa didn't believe in God. I would purposefully ask him to read me a book and pick out one that was a Bible story. He didn't like to read it, but did any way. Despite all his hang ups, he did love me and was a good grandpa to me. He loved Cadillacs and had 3 1950's convertibles with the big wing tail ends. I would ride next to him in parades. He also baby sat me a lot. I remember falling asleep in bed next to him as Johnny Carson played on the TV. In the morning we would get up and go to his office, he was an optometrist. We would stop and get doughnuts from Day Light Doughnuts. For me, doughnut holes for him a bear claw. He always gave me a bite of his... At lunch we would go eat with some of his friends and then he would make time to go to a park so I could play. He was a softy and would take me to several if I asked. He was also a good singer. He liked big band and Frank Sinatra. He and I would "rock out" to "New York New York." He would play over and over on his 8 track player!!! LOL! He also sang some songs like: The Moon Shines Tonight on Pretty Red Wing, Don't Fence Me In, Where the Buffalo Roam, and many more I can't remember right now. But, half the songs were filled in with "doo doos" where he didn't know the words. He had the straightest, pointiest nose I have ever seen!!! And the softest silver hair that covered his head until his death. He will be missed.

Reading

What I am currently reading...
Bringing Up Boys - Dr. Dobson
This is a good read if you have boys or girls. However it kind of discourages me that the world is just too big and bad and that there is nothing I can do as a parent to over come it. It is very interesting and I can see that a lot of what he says is true from my teaching experience.

Jesus Centered Youth Ministry - Rick Lawerence
This is one of the best books I have read in a LONG time. It has encouraged me to pursue the REAL Jesus! I am savoring every chapter!

What I want to read next...
Messages - A book on communication.
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan - Lisa See
Uncle Tom's Cabin - Harriet Beecher Stowe

Why Staying Home is Possible

I have a lot of friends ask me how I am able to stay at home and afford to live comfortably. Here is a few things I have learned about making the most of working at home. Foremost, I think that when you make the decision to stay at home and raise your children you need to realize that that doesn't imply that you aren't working. In fact, I feel like I work very hard to make the most of my husband's income and to live in a manor worthy of his hard work. So...here goes.

Evaluate if you need…

Cable

Two cell phones or two cells and a home phone

Netflix

Two cars (if husband works near home could he get a ride or could you shuttle him?)

How can you get rid of…

Car payments, could you buy a cheaper used car that you could pay for in full?

Credit card bills, why use credit if you don’t have the funds?

High mortgages or rent?

Unnecessary baby costs: formula, diapers, baby food?

Eating costs: eating out or buying pre-made frozen foods?

Money Saving Tips that have worked for us:

Evaluate diaper costs:

Could you cloth diaper? Disposables cost around $2000-3000 for the 2-4 years a child uses them. To outfit a child with cloth diapers for birth to age 3 is around $300 total. Even if they are only used half the time you still save at least $500 a year and cloth diapers can be reused child after child. If you use cloth diapers it is logical to use cloth wipes too. It is honestly the easiest way to save great amounts of money. The key is to get into a routine of using them that works for you.

Could you use the cheapest disposables? I like Walmart’s brand “Parent’s Choice” we have very few leaks and they are about $6 cheaper than the name brands, even after coupons. I also make my own wipes at virtually no cost. All that is needed is a few circular Tupperware tubes, paper towels, an electric knife and the soap and oil of your choice.

Evaluate how baby will be fed:

Will you nurse or formula feed? By staying home can you avoid the cost of formula, bottles, pumps, and the extra medical costs that will come with a formula fed baby? To formula feed for a year (using the cheapest formula) you will spend at least $1500. That is not including equipment costs (bottles, nipples, brushes and dish washing costs) or extra medical costs that you will surely save on a better immunized baby that has all of your antibodies. We took Addie to the Dr. one time during her first year of life, other than well baby check ups and never had to pay for prescription meds for ear infections or other things. Do you need to buy an expensive pump? Most mothers find that there is little difference or that pumps just don’t work for them. If you are staying at home the majority of the time would a hand pump allow you to store up a minimal amount of milk for outings?

How will you solid feed your baby? Will you use generic brands or want to use organic? Do you have the time to make your own baby food? To spend one day a month making and storing up frozen baby food is money and time well spent. I found one large sweet potato would make from 8-12 containers of baby food because it is thick and must be diluted. It was about 10 cents per container, a far cry from the organic food that costs from 49-69 cents. The same was true for most squash, apples, carrots and frozen greens. However, peas, green beans and other watery veggies produce much less. All that is needed is 5-10 cheep ice cube trays, and food mill or blender and the food of your choice. It tastes so much better too!

What talents do you have? What could you make for your baby? I found that it was very simple to sew a baby ring sling and have gotten months and months of use out of it, where the Baby Bjorn carrier was only used for 4 months (a waste of money!) Can you make your babies bedding or get a unisex bedding set that can be reused for multiple children?

What kind of clothes will baby wear? You will likely get lots of beautiful clothes for baby from 0-3 months and from 3-6 months. Take back the unnecessary and buy older age clothes, 12-18 and up. By then people will stop buying for you. Does your new baby need fancy shoes? Just get some cozy blankets. I also found that it was a good idea to buddy up to moms with older children, because they want to get rid of old clothes eventually. Always look for clothes at thrift stores, children’s consignments and garage sales first. See if your community has a consignment clothing sale on a regular basis. Trade clothes with close trusted friends or family. Sell what you don’t like on Ebay or at a consignment shop, no use hanging on to it.

What baby equipment do you REALLY need?

Do you need both a bouncer and a swing? In reality a swing will only be used for 0-4 months. Try to barrow one or buy a used one from a friend.

Do you need a pack ‘n play with all the “bells and whistles” Most of those extras (canopies, vibrators, changing stations) will only be used for the first 4 months, if that. If you are for going a crib it might be a good idea to get a well built pack ‘n play, but if not, don’t spend the extra money on it. Remember you have to store all those extras some place too!

Do you need a changing table? Most normal dressers are much more practical and can be used much longer.

Do you need a high chair? A booster high chair is $25 compared to $100+ for a high chair. Boosters are portable and much easier to clean too.

Do you need a Bjorn front carrier? Evaluate how much you will actually use it. They only accommodate a baby up to 15 lbs. The Ergo carrier will carry a child up to 40 lbs and carries on front, back and hip.

Do you need lots of toys? Toys create clutter, messes and usually break with in the first year? Do you need both a play mat center and a exersaucer or a jumper? One will probably do it. I thought the exersaucer was the best. Could you borrow one from a friend? For the price of a junky plastic toy could you buy a nice wooden toy? Wooden toys are better for babies and last much longer. Expect any electronic toy to short out, they will and they eat up batteries too.

Other Saving Ideas:

Food costs are what we always go over budget on. Can you sacrifice eating out to only once a week? Make it a special thing. Go some where nice. Learn about meal planning and investigate where the cheapest places to shop are.

I also have been investigating the Once a Month cooking. It takes lots of planning but would seem to save lots of money. What could you cook a double batch of a freeze?

Home Sweet Home

We live in a very lovely place. This is the view from our dinning room window. We have AMAZING sunsets. We have lived here for a whole year now! It is hard to believe it. I still miss Tennessee, the moisture, the slow pace of life, how anything will grow and the deep green. But, honestly wouldn't move back if we had the chance.
Our town is also a great community. We have the cutest down town area, parks and train station. There is a lot to do here (sometimes a bit too much). I am loving getting plugged in at our church and MOPS group.

A Hard Good Week

Last week was a difficult week for me. I taught the evening Bible lessons for 30 eight to eleven year olds at our camp for underpriviledged youth. They are AMAZING girls! It was a great experience, but yet very very growth producing! I had a lot of trouble the week before getting my thoughts together on what I would teach. I was struggling with the Lord and with not feeling a response or direction from Him. As mentioned below, I have been experiencing a lot of growth, which means a lot of trials along with it...back to teaching.
It was one of the most challenging teaching experiences I have ever had! Not only were the girls very inattentive, but I had a lot of trouble teaching. Ugh... It was hard. The last two nights were better, but it was still very hard. I know one night two 10 year olds were laughing at me because I kept saying "um." They were probably counting how many times I said it!!! LOL! My mind was just not focusing easily.
Not only that, but Tim and I were going through some good, but hard times in refocusing our relationship and direction as a family. Our priorities are just a bit out of whack, we are not being intentional about much of anything.
In all of this I praise the Lord! It has caused me to really need Him, seek Him and desire to know Him more. It has cause me to see myself as I really am and Jesus for who He really is! Even the teaching faux pause (how is that spelled???) were of value, in that Tim really helped me to learn and grow through it, I leaned on him a ton! I am just glad that week is over!!!

Growing

Ugh... Where do I even begin? Well, lately I have seen one thing after another in myself that I don't like. I am just not the person I want to be, think others think I ought to be, or who the Lord has created me to be. More and more I realize that so much of what I do is selfish and pride based. I am too prideful to let other see me for who I really am that I push them away or don't let them in (both emotionally/socially and even physically). It is making me miserable and I realize that I am not living the "full" life the Lord intends for me to live.
This has really come to a head the past 2 weeks, both with my husband and with friends. We live in this great community, with women gallore that I could seek out to be friends with, and yet I don't because I can't get my life tiddy enough to feel like I should invite them in (both in my house and in my personal life). Now that I realize my complete pridefulness, I am even more down on myself, completely ashamed and not sure how to make it right. Which is in one way just a continuation of the pride. I don't need to fix it all, or to be so perfect. Yet I still fear others won't like me or think I am a good wife, mom, etc...
I wonder when I became like this. Why I care what others think so much! God is also showing me that I don't nearly know Him for who he REALLY is. Who is the REAL Jesus? He isn't the "nice", clean, nonconfrontational, boring preacher that so many sunday school teachers make him out to be. He was confrontational, even rude, and in your face!

Oops...baby crying will finish later...

A Day at the Park

Today I had my 6 week post natal check up. Elias is 11 lbs. 3 oz.!!!! I am so glad he is growing well. After that we went to the park, to a mommy friend's birthday. It was a fun morning of hanging out, getting to know other women and just playing around. While at the park I met up with other moms that were meeting to plan homeschooling stuff. It was great to just network with them a bit. I may start meeting with them too (I know, I am a bit of an over acheiver, Addie being only 2). I guess it is just good to get your foot in the door and to make relationships. Furthermore, today is a great day because Tim is getting back from the staff backpacking trip...any minute now in fact!!! Can't wait!

"Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine by the sides of your house; your sons shall be like olive plants around your table." Psa 128:3

Elias is 6 weeks old today! He is such a calm and content little guy. He has just started grinning and cooing at us lately.
Addie is 2 years old and is such a sweet and spunky girl. She is learning to use the potty and is doing really well.

About Us

My husband and I work at a summer camp for underpriviledged youth in southwest Colorado. This is our second summer here. The camp serves 8-18 year olds. The camp offers the following activities: camping, backpacking, rafting, high ropes activities, various games, swimming, horsemanship, skills classes, bb guns, archery, and paint ball. We also have a garden and animals (baby lambs, chicks, ducklings and turkeys, and grown goats).
Next week we have 8-11 year old girls come. During this camp I will be teaching the evening lessons. I am super excited about this opportunity. I will also be teaching skills classes for older girls, mainly knitting and cooking classes. My husband will be leading backpacking trips that hike the Colorado trail through the San Juans.
It is such a blessing being a part of this ministry and learning and growing as people here!

Potty Training 101

Here is my formula for potty training. Or, at least what I have done by trial and error.
- We took away all diaper during the day. We used pantys, training underwear and a nude bottom, except for naps and bed time. While going out we put a cloth diaper cover over undies.
- Addie wore dressed almost all the time. As pulling pants down just makes it more difficult.
- Croc shoes (or Walmart equivalent) are wonderful for rinsing off after accidents.
- Invest in a handful of pairs of thick (cloth diaper brand, as they are more absorbent) training pants, get them a size too big as they will be easier to pull down. They also come in handle later for night training and for use during sicknesses.
- Get all undies in a size too big...easier to pull down.
- Get a "Piddle Pad" for your car seat, it is worth the money!  Continually taking off your carseat cover and washing it isn't much fun and our carseat was so yucky I almost wanted to buy a new one!
- We role played the potty process with a favorite animal and encouraged the trainee to help.
- We used little treats to reward successful potty trips.
- When accidents happened we let it roll off our back, but explained how "yucky" it is to have wet pants or to potty on the floor.
- We used a potty chair and a few books to help the trainee sit for a bit an enjoy the potty chair.
- We ask the trainee every 1/2 hour if they are "still dry" and have them feel to make sure. Then we tell them it is "time to go potty."
- We praised everytime they are dry and everytime they have a successful potty trip!!!
- We kept it as fun as possible!

Results:
- It took about 3 days to get use to going tinkle on the potty.
- On day 4 she started going poop on the potty, with some strong encouragement.
- She still had accidents with pantys on by day 5, but with a bare bottom she made it to the potty every time.
